The lesson will start with the introduction of today's grammar point, taken from the Jolly Grammar curriculum. For example we will focus on the use of verbs or speech marks. We then look at examples in stories, and the teacher will take students through examples on the board. We'll then complete a short worksheet on the grammar point to consolidate what we have learnt.
Introduction of theme. The teacher will introduce today's theme, something the children can relate to, such as birthday parties, the rainforest, the zoo, theme parks, a visit to the doctor's etc. We will then brainstorm vocabulary related to the theme and have a discussion. Sometimes a story book will be used to stimulate the children's imagination. Sometimes a practical game will be used to excite the students. For example on the topic of birthdays we make pull mystery items from a birthday sack, discuss them, and decide whether they are 'good' or 'bad presents' to receive and why.
After these warm up activities we will ask the students to do 20 minutes of speedwriting on their experiences of a trip to the doctors or trip to the zoo etc. The aim of speedwriting is to write from the imagination without the worries about grammar and spelling that usually accompany younger children. The aim is to instill confidence in the students ability to write. When finished the teacher will read through the text with the student and point out any grammatical or spelling errors while, of course, commending them on their work. We will also encourage students to stand up, read out, and share their work with the rest of the class.
